Do you ever feel like you can't write? That no matter what you do, the words just won't come to you?
You're not alone.
Believe it or not, everyone experiences writer’s block at some point.
Staring at a blank screen (or paper) desperately trying to think of something to say is enough to make even the most experienced writer feel anxious.
But don’t despair!
Here are a few techniques you can try to get those creative juices flowing again.
1. Get Organized: This may seem like a no-brainer, but getting your ideas together in a way that makes sense to you will help you move on from that blank page stare.
Make an outline, start brainstorming, or just jot down quick thoughts in a notebook.
This will help to make it a little easier to actually start writing.
2. Take a break: Once you’ve got some ideas down, step away from your project for a little while.
Go for a walk, take a nap, or even go to the movies; just do something completely unrelated to writing.
It's okay to take a break and come back to your work later with fresh eyes.
You may actually be surprised at how much easier it is to get started.
3. Set some limits: Trying to write an entire novel in one sitting is probably not going to happen, and it’s not necessary either.
Instead, start by setting a smaller goal, such as writing for 10 minutes or completing one page.
Once you’ve accomplished your goal, set a new one.
Having manageable goals will help you stay on track and avoid feeling overwhelmed.
4. Write in a different location: If you usually write at your desk, try changing locations.
Sometimes all it takes is a change of scenery to jumpstart your creativity!
5. Read more: It may seem counterintuitive, but one of the best ways to overcome writer’s block is to read more often.
Reading gives you exposure to new ideas and different writing styles. This can get you moving in the right direction.
If you are struggling with writer's block, try some of these techniques to get the words flowing again.
Don’t be afraid to experiment with different writing techniques or formats either to find what works best for you.
Celebrate your successes along the way no matter how big or small.
And if all else fails, there’s always ice cream!
